The agency researched and tested more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of bottled water over a four-year period.
Nearly one third showed some signs of contamination from bacteria and potentially carcinogenic chemicals such as arsenic and trihalomethanes. While these contaminants do not pose serious health risks to most people, the water could be dangerous for people with vulnerable immune systems, frail elderly people, some infants, and transplant or cancer patients, according to the council. In addition, infrequent testing for contaminants and sporadic inspection of processing plans must be solved before bottled water can be assumed to be sanitary as even regular U.S. tap water. Currently bottled water companies are not required to test for Cryptosporidium, even though bottled water sources often are just as prone to Crypto contamination as any other drinking water source.
The very informative NRDC Report also states, “while Americans who choose to buy bottled water deserve the assurance that it is safe, the long-term solution to our drinking water problems is to ensure that safe, clean, good-tasting drinking water comes from our taps. Those who are particularly concerned about the quality of their tap water can take action by 1) calling their state drinking water program or the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800 426-4791) for a list of state certified labs; and 2) purchasing filters certified by NSF International (800 NSF-MARK) to remove the contaminants of special concern to the consumer.”
